Eko-Laborative:

Spring 2009 Organic & Fair-Made Sustainable Fashion presented by EKO-LAB & Ekovaruhuset

EKO-LAB and Ekovaruhuset are pleased to announce their premiere Organic and Fair-Made sustainable fashion exhibition during Spring 2009 NY Fashion Week.

On Tuesday, September 9th, 2008, these two unique ‘organic fashion houses’ will unveil their one-of-a-kind organic designs in a hand-picked selection of internationally and locally based eco-fashion designers. Each piece to be featured in the Fashion Week exhibition has been conceived and produced following strict, sustainability guidelines, specifically that of using certified organic fabrics and materials, many of which are uniquely treated with non-toxic, vegetable dyes and/or low-impact production methods. The gorgeous designs on view will be eco-luxurious in every detail and aspect of wearability while also incorporating ‘haute couture’ as a vital, fashion-forward inspiration.

In the spirit of true sustainability, the majority of the designs displayed will also be available to the public immediately following the exhibition at the Ekovaruhuset’s NYC boutique.

Participating Eko-Laborative designers include: Amy Mohlenhoff, Kaori Yamazaki, Meiling Chen, Melissa Kirgan, Mika Machida Wyche, Xing-Zhen Chung-Hilyard, Johanna Hofring, Tor Soderin, Righteous, Desiree Hamman, Ashley Helvey, and Lara Miller.

The September 8th event will take place from 3:00pm to 6:00pm at The Gabarron Foundation’s Carriage House on 149 East 38th Street, between Lexington & 3rd Avenues.

Arrive early to check out the book launch of Lovely Daze Issue 5: Hunters & Gatherers and also to enjoy live music and yummy organic treats, teas and wine offered by the exhibition’s sponsors.

EKO-LAB is a collaborative of six NYC-based eco-fashion designers who work collectively to promote sustainability via their handcrafted, thoughtfully produced designs. The collaborative is closely affiliated with Ekovaruhuset, the original ‘Organic and Fair-Made’ eco-fashion boutique on NYC’s happening Lower East Side. Ekovaruhuset first opened its doors in 2006 under the vision and guidance of innovative eco-designer and organic clothing pioneer, Johanna Hofring. Since then their designs have been featured on the pages of major editorial publications such Harpers Bazaar Japan, Vogue Italia, Nylon, Lucky, Selvedge, and Ecocolo – to name a few, as well as online at Inhabitat.com, Treehugger, WorldChanging, Eco-Chick, and Refinery 29. In Spring of 2008 Ekovaruhuset presented their sustainable-style runway show, ‘HOUSE of ORGANIC’ during NY Fashion Week and also participated in Designers & Agents in NYC and LA.

“Ekovaruhuset, which means “House of Organic” carries clothes that are environmentally friendly and good for your body. It feels amazing to touch their creations made from non-pesticide treated organic cotton and sheep who never be fed chemical foods.” ~ Elle Japan

“From Stockholm to New York, Johanna Hofring, turns heads with a talented hand picked group of designers who interpret sustainable fashion with the emotional graphic pieces of XZ and the sophisticated works of Meiling Chen.” ~ Vogue Italia

EKO-LAB’s mission is one of demonstrating through their artisanal, organic creations that sustainable fashion can truly be both high-end (eco) luxurious as well as environmentally and socially responsible.
